At the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes in Las Vegas, Nev., competitors faced the second leg of preliminary competition, the herd work. Eight sets of Open riders tested their 4- and 5-year-old horses’ skills Monday, March 31, with the remaining two Open sets scheduled for Tuesday, April 1. The Stakes Non Pro competitors and the Holy Cow Performance Horses Open Bridle Spectacular competitors also work out of the herd April 1.
The high-scoring herd work in the Stakes Open and Intermediate Open belonged to Gotta Go Get It (Smart Little Pepinic x Got Mister x Mister Dual Pep), a 2009 stallion shown by John Ward and owned by 4D Ranch/Ward Ranch. Their 220 herd score, combined with Sunday’s 213.5 rein work score, gave them a 433.5 composite, placing them in a tie for first place in the Intermediate Open prelims after two events. Ward and Gotta Go Get It share the current composite lead with Very Red Remedy (Very Smart Remedy x Flo N Blue Boon x Pretty Boy Boon), shown by Nicolas Barthelemy and owned by Sheri Jamieson, also with a 438 (215.5 herd/218 rein) on two events.

There is also a tie for the current composite lead in the Stakes Open. After two events, Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory), shown by Kelby Phillips and owned by Garth and Amanda Gardiner, has a 438 (216 herd/222 rein). Jackies Sparkle (Nic It In The Bud x Shinersdiamondjackie), shown by Phillip Ralls for Estelle Roitblat, also put together a 438 (219 herd/219 rein).
In the Limited Open and Level 1 Limited Open, Hearts Satin Fox (Heart Of A Fox x Satin Playboy x Freckles Playboy), shown by Erin Taormino for owners Garth and Amanda Gardiner, led today’s herd work round with a 214. Taormino piloted the 2010 mare to a 215 in the rein work, which also gives her the current top spot in the composite for both divisions.
The leaders could change when the remaining two sets of Stakes Open preliminary riders show in the herd work. The show resumes Tuesday, April 1 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific. A free live webcast by Equine Promotion is available at www.NRCHA.com.
