NRCHA Stakes Herd Work Preliminaries Complete

The calendar says it’s April Fool’s Day, but it was serious business in the show pen for National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes competitors, as the herd work preliminaries for all Open and Non Pro divisions wrapped up at the South Point Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

Two sets of Open Stakes competitors showed today in the herd, but here was no change in the Open division leaders from Monday, either in the go-round or the composite after two events.

Riders in all the Non Pro, Amateur and Non Pro Limited divisions faced the cattle today in the herd prelims, with several riders closely matched at the top of the Non Pro results sheet.

Leading the Non Pro herd work go-round with a 213.5 was last year’s Stakes Non Pro Champion combination, Tammy Jo Hays, Nocona, Texas, and her 2009 mare Two Kitties (Smooth As A Cat x SR Jaguar x Doc O’Lena). Combined with her 217 in the rein work, it was enough for Hays to lead the Non Pro preliminary composite after two events, with a 430.5.

In the Intermediate Non Pro, three riders marked a 213 to share the lead in the division: Bubba Petty and Pepinics Lil Outlaw (Smart Little Pepinic x Pand Delight x Grays Starlight); Elizabeth Kania and Uno What Time It Flo (Uno What Time It Is x Dew It Flo x Mr Peponita Flo); and Toni Heath with Smart Peppy Doc Doll (Smart Peppy Doc x Docs Miss Baby Hall x Lotta Mocha). Petty leads the Intermediate Non Pro composite with a 429.5 (213 herd/216.5 rein), and his score also earns the current top spot in the Novice Non Pro.

Parke Greeson and Checkn Out The Ladys (Im Countin Checks x No Lady Wood x Zack T Wood) won the Amateur herd work with a 210, and leads the composite in that division with a 422.5.

Fifteen formidable bridle horses also walked to the herd at the South Point today, as the first leg of competition in the Holy Cow Performance Horses Open Bridle Spectacular got underway. At the top of the results sheet with a 221 was the 2005 gelding Smooth N Cash (Smooth As A Cat x Dox Gavacash x Miss N Cash), shown by Jake Gorrell, Hanford, Calif., and owned by Roloff Ranch.
